Why can't I add mail sounds in Sierra

After upgrading to Sierra, I can no longer add a "personal" sound from my files to act as my "new message sound". The sound folder is locked and I, even as administrator, can not unlock it or add sounds to the folder.  All I have now is a drop-down list of predetermined Apple choices, and none of those choses includes adding new sounds.  The preference once offered me the choice of going to my files, I no longer have that choice. Can anyone tell me how to add my own sounds?

2.7 GHz intel core i7

8 gb memory

as if any of that matters, and, of course MAC OS Sierra 10.12.

Nice reply. ::smh::

Try adding it to ~/Library/Sounds instead of /System/Library/Sounds.

Greetings gklav,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It seems like you want to use a custom sound in Mail when a new message arrives. I would recommend you read this article, it explains how the feature works and what is available.

New messages sound

The sound to play when you receive messages. To sample a sound, click the pop-up menu, then choose a sound.

Mail for Mac: General preferences in Mail

Take care.

That was, without a doubt, the most useless response next to "Uuhhhmmm"  Sorry James, but that does nothing to answer my question.

Let me see if I can rephrase the question and actually get an answer.  How do I add sounds to my SOUNDS FOLDER?   I wish to add CUSTOM sounds to my sound folder (As I have been able to do in the past) Instead of using the boring default sounds that come with the OS.  With Sierra, I can no longer do this.  WHY? and is there something I am missing?  The folder is locked and I can't seem to unlock to ADD custom sounds to Apple mail.

Nice reply. ::smh::

Try adding it to ~/Library/Sounds instead of /System/Library/Sounds.

Thank you.  That worked

You're welcome.

It worked for me too. I had to add the sounds folder, but when I did, my custom sound showed up in the system sound preferences.

This didn't work for me. I can see the custom sounds in the dropdown of Mail prefs, but selecting one of those doesn't stick, it has a small question mark next to it when selected, and Mail plays the default sound instead.

Not sure why it's not working. The sounds do have to be in an .aif format I believe.

Same here. I re-saved the files as .aiff again, just to be sure. The files work fine as alert sounds in System Preferences/Sound, but not in Mail.

I really don't know. Have you tried restarting?

Just restarted, still no luck.

So far I have made sure the custom sound files are saved as .aiff and they are in ~Library/Sounds. The files work fine as alert sounds in System Preferences/Sound, but not in Mail. I have quit and reopened Mail, as well as restarted.

I had used these files in Mail since many years without any issues.

Bummer!

I'm having the same issue whereby it is locked. Adding the audio file to ~/Library/Sounds instead of /System/Library/Sounds works for most of the Applications, however not the one I need it to.

I suspect it's because the Application points directly to /System/Library/Sounds (see screenshot).

So back to the original question for; Is there anyway to add sounds to /System/Library/Sounds?

Thanks,

Geordie

FWIW, your screenshot clearly shows it points to ~/Library/Sounds not /System/Library/Sounds

A ringtone file should have the extension .m4r

Yes you can.

Here is the link for information.

Re: replace or add sounds

Finder window, hold down option key and click GO....

GO>Library>Sounds (double click to open - the folder will be empty if you have not added any personal sounds) then drag and drop .aiff sounds.
