Can I prevent iTunes from backing up photos?

My wife keeps way too many photos on her iPhone. They are also imported into Photos, but they still get backed up with the iTunes backup (I'm not using iCloud backup). Is there any way of making it so photos imported into Photos do not get backed up by iTunes? It's such a waste of disk space having them in both places, and makes it so slow to create archives of iPhone backups. I would just delete them all from the phone after importing into Photos, but she wants a lot of them to remain on the Phone, and won't take the time to organize them.
