top half of ipod 6 overheats and lower half get...

So I have an iPod 6g and I got it in February of this year as a birthday gift as a replacement for my old one. Recently it's had the major problem of the top half of the device will get really hot and the lower half will get extremely cold. I usually end up fixing it by warming the cold half myself with my hand. I went to customer support and was told to factory reset my iPod, which seems stupid and unnecessary since it's an issue with the device itself. I'm considering replacing it completely but that'll put me out $200 so I want to be sure that's what needs to be done.
