Do I need to replace keyboard if one key is dead?

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13in with a dead 'delete' key. No other keys are affected. As far as I know, there was no spillage. Is there a way to diagnose if the key just needs to be cleaned or if the whole keyboard needs to be replaced just to fix the one key? I turned on the keyboard viewer and when pressing the key it does not indicate it on the viewer. Is it most likely the sensor is damaged? I understand that replacing the keyboard is not the simplest task, so I just wanted to know if it's worth it. I'd also consider mapping the 'delete' function to another key (maybe one of the command keys) if anyone has any suggestions on that.

Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

I was hoping that would be last resort, as I imagine having Apple replace an uppercase out of warranty is probably pretty expensive (maybe more $$ than it's worth for the age of the laptop).

Before you make that decision you should at least find out what it costs rather than deciding it's too expensive based on no evidence. You can get an estimate for free.
