iMac fan on full blast; resetting SMC not worki...

I have a 2011 iMac that has worked flawlessly since day one. To make it a little faster, I added more RAM to it about 2 years ago. Perfect. I've shut it down and restarted it a ton over the years with no problems ever.

We just moved across the country and the iMac was in storage for a month. Started it up today, ready to get going and the fan cam on almost instantly, at full blast! I've looked all over the forums where people tell you to unplug it, wait 15 seconds, plug it back in, wait 5 more seconds, then turn it on, AND IT'S STILL BLOWING!

Hoping someone has some other ideas. I've got 20Gbs of RAM, plenty of hard disk space, and according to the activity monitor, nothing weird is running in the background. All works well. Just the stupid, loud fan.

Anyone have any ideas? This seems to be super common.

Thanks!

Sometimes you have to reset the SMC 2-3 times to effect a change. If the fans still run after that you should probably run the Apple Hardware Test How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support
