how to stop auto play on importing audio/video
I am so sorry to post this question. I've seen it many times around on internet, but it is driving me ABSOLUTELY MAD. After importing audio/video on iTunes (plus copy into iTunesLibrary), the file automatically starts playing. It is annoying me more and more, I can not seem to turn the function off. iTunes seems to be defaulted nowadays to start autoplay after importing music or video into iTunes~?
Please someone, where can I turn this function off????????????
thanx for your help. But honestly, with iTunes I don't expect there is a solution. I hope there will be good software available in future OS-versions.

Go to Preferences, there is a tick box in there, I think it's on Importing tab ( but there aren't many to choose from ). Uncheck it.
Are there .mu3 playlists in the folders you are importing? These used to be ignored, but are now added to the library and iTunes starts playing them after they are imported.

Hi! Thanx for the reply. But nope....been through all preferences many times before. There is no such tick box in this version of iTunes. Previous editions had it indeed. I use iTunes 10 version 10,6,1(7) 64bit .
Believe me...there is NO tick box or listbox in here
That is why it is making me so mad! Why can't Apple just give me the choice of enabling/disabling this feature!? When you are listening to some music and you import a video or music...it is very annoying that it stops the current playing and starts playing the just imported file(s).
iTunes was never my favourite, but well... maybe I am not Apple-minded enough (yet)
Hi turingtest2
Nope. none whatsoever. I only import mp3's or m4v's. Nothing else.
OK, not that then. Meant .m3u btw. How are are you importing the new tracks? Add folder to library, drag and drop onto the main iTunes window or the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder, or double-clicking the selection?
tt2
It doesn't happen with mine. I will take a look tonight after work.

The Importing tab and checkbox to play items while importing was removed almost 4 years ago in iTunes 8.
I know...m3u
Well usualy I take the files (mp3 or m4v) from a folder (mostly the downloadfolder :s) and drag it into iTunes. Do that when I have the iTunes screen on my mac opened or just drag them to the iTunes-icon in my Dock. Is the same thing i guess. In my preferences I clicked the box ON for adding automatically to my iTunes-library (so the folder on my account).
I don't think it is possible btw....Apple defaulted the autoplay...can't think of any other explanation since there is no way to alter it in iTunes 10 preferences.
Still... hope someone will find an answer. I still think it stinks like this. :O
Dropping onto the dock icon might be equivalent to a request to play the track(s) adding to library if not already in it. Try dropping the file(s) into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder in the media folder instead. Any better?

Dragging to the dock icon will add to iTunes and play the songs.
It won't play if using the Auomatically add to iTunes folder (I keep a shortcut to this folder on my desktop) and I can't get it to play when adding it except the icon in the dock.
Hey tt2 and Chris!
Uhm...you both talk aout the actual folder 'automatic add to iTunes'? So, have to look that up tomorrowmorning. It is an actual folder in my iTunes media folder???
I don't get it. I thought by checking the box in preferences (automatically add to iTunes) that it makes a copy of the file that I wanted to add and place it in my iTunes library. Then I throw away the original which I dragged into iTunes.
So, i understand that is not the way to add files?
But dragging into the folder 'automatically add to iTunes', does that mean that there are more than one copies of a file after adding? Meaning...one in the 'automatically add to-folder' AND in the library? I only need one file....otherwise I wind up with several duplicates. Just one in iTunes library will do fine for me. There is backup elsewhere for files i need to keep....
But anyway...thanx for the tip. Will try this tomorrow, search for the automatically add to-folder and let you know!
Rudi
By default it will be at <User>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically Add to iTunes.
If you move content into that folder it will be added to the library and moved to the usual location according to its tag properties (even if you don't normally let iTunes organize your media) without creating any copies.

tt2 and Chris CA,
wanna thank both for coming up with the gesture of using the 'automatically add to iTunes'-folder!!!! This works! Problem solved. Very handy, just move the files to that folder and it appears in iTunes in a few seconds....no extra copies indeed. This way of mporting seems even faster than dragging it in the dock-icon or into an open window of iTunes.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! You saved a guy from going mad haha!!!!!!
Too bad though tips like these are so hard to find in the manual.
greaatz,
Rudi
You're welcome.
