MacBook Pro 13 2016 runs hot
I own the MacBook Pro 13 inch without touch bar. I notice that the system got significantly warm while i was watching an online show, and feel uncomfortable to use it on my lap (even warmer if it is charging at the same time). I'm not sure if this is normal because I always thought MacBook runs cooler than other systems, especially when doing light tasks like watching an online show. I have a case on my MacBook but I doubt it would contribute to the heating, its bottom panel has many vents. I heard many people are complaining about the battery issue of the touch bar version, thus wondering if this is a related issue (may be with the battery?). This is my first MacBook ever so I don't know if the heat is normal. I seriously always thought MacBook is designed to run cool all the time when I bought it.
Good morning anhtuanyh,
Congratulations on the purchase of your first Mac! I'll include some resources below to help you get started with your MacBook Pro and the macOS Sierra operating system. I understand you are concerned about the operating temperature and the battery life of your notebook computer. You may want to remove the case that you purchased for a short while to see if you notice a difference in the temperature of your Mac. The vents in the case may not match the vents on your computer. Take a look at the information below:

Enjoy your day!
Braden85,
Thanks for the resources you shared. Unfortunally the temperatures provided from "Mac Notebooks: Operating temperature" are not accurate. My macbook pro 15' touch bar at 37º C when just navigating the internet with Chrome. If I use Affinity Photo or Affinity Designer or any other image, video package, my mbp run around 88º C! The touch bar is hot for touching close to 90º C. I mean this thing gets hot even when I put it to sleep. I am not kidding this is too hot for a macbook pro that I paid $2500 for. I also have a macbook pro 15' 2015 and it does not get as hot as the new model.
I have the exact same issue as Braden85.
I just woke up this morning to find my MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar to be extremely hot. The lid was closed and it was plugged in with no other external devices connected. It is supposed to be sleeping when the lid is closed, but I found the fan was running. When I opened the lid, it asked me to sign in and generally was acting as if it was sleeping, but the response time for having the login screen to appear was instantaneous, which makes me think it was not fully sleeping. I've noticed similar behavior on a regular basis... the fan is not usually running, but having a hot Mac when all it is doing is sleeping & charging is a daily occurrence.
My MacBook Pro also gets uncomfortably hot when simply browsing the web (news sits, Facebook, Pinterest browsing... no video watching) which are things I would be able to do for long periods on my old MacBook Pro without a heat issue.
I also hate the Touch Bar. The issue is that, unlike the keyboard, it does not require any pressure to activate the "button/key" you are "pressing". As a result, I regularly activate features in the Touch Bar without conscious intent. I might be attempting to type Command-W to close a browser window and have one of my fingers lightly brush the Touch Bar, which changes which browser window is active right before the window closes. I have also activated Siri via its button dozens of times by accident. I can't think of a single time when I have actually wanted to use a feature that is found on the Touch Bar in a way that would be better than a normal keyboard. My eyes are looking at the screen and I am a touch typist... looking down to see what feature is where is a very unnatural thing for a touch typist. That makes anything having to do with the Touch Bar to slow me down. I'd much rather have a touch screen than a touch bar, since I wouldn't have to move my eyes away from where they want to be looking to use it. I haven't found a method for disabling the Touch Bar in software. I might have to experiment to see if placing a piece of tape over it would be an effective method to disable it.
Combine the heat issue with my dislike of the Touch Bar and having to use a dongle to connect any external device makes it so that I am extremely dissatisfied with my new MacBook Pro. I've used Apple computers since 1980 back in the Apple ][ days and am usually delighted when I get a new computer, but this is the first time in recent memory that upgrading my computer didn't feel like an upgrade. I'm not sure where to go from here since I need the fastest machine I can get ahold of for the work I do in Photoshop and with video.

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I primarily use my MacBook 15" with Touch Bar for school and sometimes I like to play games and do other things. For example, I go on Roblox Prison Life which is a basic game and within 2 minutes my MacBook will be very hot. I could cook a steak on it.. I'm a huge Apple fan but I'm slightly disappointed and I'm concerned. I paid a lot of money for this thing and I'm not sure if this heating up is normal or not. Not sure what to do. I bought it exactly a week ago.
I have the exact same issue, only browsing on Firefox with 8-9 tabs open and Skype call that's it. Paying a **** lot of money for Mac and what you get in return is a HEATER...
Apple care just re-installed the OS but no change, they even said that they checked it watching videos on Youtube, but now I think they did nothing.
I seriously want everyone who is facing this similar issue to write to APPLE to get MACBOOK PRO 2015 w/o touch bar or with touch bar to be REPLACED.
I just returned a Mac Pro 13 with touch bar and the fastest processor upgrade because of excessive heat. Very disappointed with Apple. I gave it 3 days of use and finally gave up. I'm wondering if the standard processor would generate less heat. I've heard the i7 creates more heat than the i5.
I have the brand new MacBook Pro without the touch bar and it also runs VERY hot. It's just getting worse. I'm about to return this thing because I can't even keep it on my lap because it gets so hot. I used photoshop on my computer for 10 minutes last night and it was so hot. I charge it and it gets hot.
It seems there must be some sort of defect that hasn't come out yet. I'm glad I paid for the insurance, I guess.
I'm back to say that I've been online for about 10 minutes and my computer is extremely hot, again. Just with online browsing and all of my photoshop files closed. It doesn't matter if it's on my lap or on a flat surface for the vents to work properly. I'm sad I have to return a new computer that I spent a lot of time to set up.
Try to install the app "mac fan control." Look it up on Google. The fan will run a bit more frequently but the laptop will be cooler.
I noticed that you are using Firefox on your MacBook. My advice is to stop using it for a while and see if that makes a difference. Don't switch to Chrome or anything else, but use Safari instead.
Why? Because I suspect that Firefox is sucking up resources on your MacBook. I found out the hard way. My MacBook Air had a meltdown because it always overheated while browsing the internet using Firefox. As soon as I stopped using Firefox and went back to Safari the overheating stopped.
Worth a try.
I'm absolutely on the same feedback and my MacPro 13" with touch bar runs hot very frequently and, even, with no many apps running. Very disappointed as this was my first Mac!
Same problem here! MacBook Pro Retina, 15", mid-2015.
Extremely high temperature while just browsing using Safari, Chrome, Opera or whatever browser I want to use.
I already tried Hardware Test, SMC Reset, PRAM reset, Install clean OS and even put my MacBook Pro into a cooler room!!!
I tried also uninstalling Adobe Flash Player, Monitoring Fans, Uninstalling Chrome and Opera, Switch Off Automatic Graphics Switching.
So now to all my friends I'm saying that with 3.000 € I bought a SILVER HEATER!!!
Very unprofessional and disappointing for an Apple product!
Brand new (but unfortunately past the return date) Macbook Pro 13 inch w/out touch bar (has the i5) running very hot. Where the touchbar would be, it's burning to the touch and in general, runs very hot. This shocks me since I just switched from a three-year old Macbook Air that was as cool as a cucumber. I'm only browsing the internet, occasionally listening to music. Very disappointed considering the price and having thought I made a significant upgrade from the Air.
Same issue here.
My first 2016 Macbook Pro I7 had issues and was identified at the genius bar after running a second test, the guy was on the ball and Apple replaced.
Now on the replacement and same issue simple tasks and the whole unit is hot. Spoke with apple support and genius bar absolutly no help and was told heat is subjective.
Need to request multiple times at genius bar to run tests, but had a lecture saying its fine just use it on a flat serivce as a desktop erm thanks if i wanted a desktop i would have bought one.
The genius guy this time had no idea what tests to run or what the previous genius bar rep had run even though it would be on my notes.
Needless to say apple have tried a multitude of times in store and over the phone to avoid this and are unwilling to help in any shape or form.
If their senors on the test are working there is no issue, but clearly is if its hot to the touch.
so in general apple answers are:
- if hot use as a desktop
- if its not hot to them not an issue but refuse to do a touch test actualy refused to touch the machine at all
This may be why they have rapidly moved to kaby lake from skylake with these.
Am just going to email every day
