Connecting a Non

Can I connect a non-Apple Display to an iMac using a DVI to USB adapter? If so, how do you do it?

I've read thru a number of 'help topics' and most say I need to use the Thunderbolt port to connect another display to my 27" iMac. The display is an old Dell and uses a DVI cable. Unfortunately, I read these posts after purchasing a DVI to USB adaptor.  I plugged it in and the iMac isn't recognizing it.   The adapter works on a Windows laptop.

If you want to try the USB 1.0 to 3.0 device, you need to check with the manufacture for mac drivers. Just keep in mind the video quality is probable going to be really poor in comparison to the Mini-DisplayPort adapter.

I would recommend return the USB adapter, and purchasing the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.

If you have a Mid 2015 iMac.

Then you will want to use a MiniDisplay Port to DVI Adapter in one of your iMac's Thunderbolt Ports.
