Playlist showing on device only

I have had an iTunes account for some years now but am not getting on very well with the most recent version/s (last 12 months).  I have a new MacBook Air and a 7th generation iPod nano which has a couple of my playlists on it.  I believe the playlists are only showing on the device because I couldn't get my old playlists to show in the sidebar when I did a software update.

I have recently purchased some new music which is showing in 'purchased' or 'recently added' but I can't seem to add it to the playlist on the device by dragging it.  It will only allow me to drag it to a new playlist.  I really don't want to have to create my playlists yet again but it doesn't seem to give me a choice.

I'm sure this is a really basic problem but I just can't seem to figure it out.  I have found a similar topic in the community but the link to the solution no longer works so I would be very grateful for anyone's guidance on the way forward.
