Use of external CD drive with new MB Pro?

I have an old (circa 2011) MB Air and an external CD drive (USB) that works well with it.  I just got a new MB Pro with nothing but TB3 connections.  I bought an adapter for USB and connected the CD drive.  THe MB Pro does not seem to recognize it.  I have tons of CDs I want to get into iTunes.  Suggestions on how to get the CD drive to work?
