CDs not mounting in iTunes 12.6.2 [ext. drive]

For years I have been using an external CD/DVD-blu-ray drive to convert my music and movies to files on my 2016 MacBook Pro (running macOS 10.12.6), using iTunes for music CDs, and Rip-it for DVDs.

Recently, CDs/DVDs just stopped mounting at all.  The disk would spin for a while, then stop, and the disk wouldn't even appear on the desktop. The problem appeared after I updated iTunes from 12.6.1 to 16.6.2.  I confirmed this on 2 other Macs, an old Mac Pro running macOS 10.11 and a Mac mini running macOS 10.12.6):  in both cases as well, the drive works fine before the iTunes update and stopped working after the iTunes update. I even did an OS restore on the Mac mini (luckily the OS restore comes with iTunes 12.6.1) and CDs & DVDs mounted again, so it's definitely that version of iTunes that broke something.

1) Has anyone else experienced something similar?  Is the problem restricted to a few models of drives (mine is a SEA TECH Aluminum External USB Blu-Ray Writer Super Drive) or a general one?

2) I am tempted to restore my laptop to iTune 12.6.1, using my TimeMachine backup.  Is there anything besides the application itself (something in /Library ?) that I should restore as well?

Thank you in advance.

jyh.
