Sierra Un
After upgrading to Sierra a couple of weeks ago, I've run into a problem with my WD My Book external drives. When my iMac wakes from sleep, some of the drives have either unmounted or they are still mounted but have become inaccessible by applications such as Time Machine and iTunes. I can however manually browse the drives that are still mounted through Finder. When I attempt to eject the mounted drives, it says they are in use. Has anyone else run into something similar? I've updated the drive firmware, run Disk Utility and the WD Diagnostic Tools against all the drives. I've also reset the PRAM from a cold boot. Not sure where to go from here. All the drives are connected individually (not daisy chained) via USB 3.0. Any suggestions?
Hi BRJM,
Thanks for getting back to us as we absolutely want to get this resolved. If you have tried Safe Mode and/or New User and recreated the issue there as well then the next best step would be to backup and reinstall the macOS or if you'd prefer, Contact Apple for support and service to check out further support options in your area.
Here are some steps you can take to back up your Mac and reinstall the macOS:
Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

Hi BRJM,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities. If I am understanding correctly, when your Mac that's running macOS Sierra goes to sleep it un-mounts your external drives. I will provide some helpful links for you that explain's why it is possibly doing this:
macOS Sierra: Save energy
About Energy Saver sleep and idle modes in Mac OS X
Please feel free to let us know if this helps or if you have any further questions.
Cheers!
I also have this problem of my WD disk disappearing. But how on earth are these articles you mention in your post about how to put your Mac to sleep telling us anything about how to stop it making external disks disappear. I am baffled by your posts.
The question is, why do the disks vanish & how can it be stopped and/ or how can the disks be made visible & useable on the desktop again.
Any helpful advice on this would be really appreciated !
Chris, thank you for your reply but neither of these articles address the issue. To give you another example, this morning after waking the iMac, all of my external drives were still mounted but none were accessible. When I attempt to eject the drives and re-mount, I receive the error "The disk wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it". Additionally, sometimes the drives are already unmounted after waking. All of the drives functioned perfectly with El Capitan, Yosemite, etc. When I installed Sierra, I did a clean install so there shouldn't be any residual gremlins in there from El Capitan.
Hi BRJM,
Thank you for replying. The reason for posting the above links in regard to Energy Saver is because it's possible that the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" and/or "Wake for network service" is checked, this could be causing the external drives to unmount. Please see below, which was in the article we've provided:
About Energy Saver sleep and idle modes in Mac OS X
About Energy Saver
The settings in Energy Saver preferences affect what happens when your Mac is left unattended for a period of time that you specify.
Please also note that you can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac
Finally, let's also test in safe mode, since safe mode has default Energy Saver settings and overrides user preferences for Energy Saver, along with fixing OS level stuff as well.

I was able to recreate the issue in Safe Mode and logging in as a New User. My Energy Saver settings are unchanged from my prior configurations when running El Capitan and Yosemite, where the same external drives were also in use with no issues. The drives do not always unmount after sleep. Sometimes they appear to be mounted but are inaccessible except by Finder. I receive an error when I attempt to eject and remount.

I was able to resolve the issue with a reinstall of Sierra. Not sure why we had a problem the first time but this seems to have done the trick. Hope it works for you.
Hello again BRJM,
That's great news, we're glad to know this resolved your issue and now working as it should.
Thanks again for using Apple Support Communities and wishing you and wonderful week.
Cheers!
Well, the reinstall of Sierra seemed to work initially. I'm noticing now that the drives will become inaccessible after the iMac is in sleep mode for an extended period of time (overnight). Shorter sleeps don't cause the disconnect to occur. Anyone have other suggestions?
I was having a similar problem to the one you describe before installing macOS Sierra. I just yesterday performed a clean install of Sierra, and found that I was still having the same problem with my WD MyBook drives. That's when I found this thread, and after doing a bit of investigation, I believe I might've found the issue.
Is the drive encrypted? If so, a possible cause for the inaccessibility is that the drive locks itself when the Mac goes to sleep. When the computer wakes up again, the drive is locked, but the icon is still on the desktop.
You may be able to browse the folders, because Finder has cached that information, but if you were to try to open a file, you will get an error. That's because the drive is locked, and Finder can't access the information it's asking for.
If you run the unlock application again, the drive returns to working order.
This behaviour makes sense, when you think about it, but it poses some usability problems if, for instance, you had a file open when you put your computer to sleep. Upon waking up your computer, the open file won't be readable/writable without the user running the unlock step, and depending on whether the app handles this issue gracefully or not, there may be trouble...
(Just now, as I wrote this, my drive went to sleep while the computer was on, due to inactivity. Running the drive unlocker made it accessible again.)
Hope this helps!
BillyBBone, thanks for replying. After the clean install of Sierra, I didn't encrypt any of the drives (including the iMac) so I could eliminate that as a factor. However, what you are describing is exactly what's occurring. Last night, I left Photos open which points to an external WD library. This morning, the drive was visible but not accessible. Time Machine was also unable to perform any backups to second WD drive. I'm considering re-encrypting all of the external drives, then decrypting to see if there was a problem with the original decryption process. Please let me know if you come across any other possible solutions. Thanks.- Bob
I have exactly the same issue - drives are unencrypted but the problems occur if the drives have been in sleep mode for some time - even if the Mac itself has been set not to sleep! The symptoms are the same in that the drives appear but cannot be accessed or unmounted but after a restart they work perfectly.
The WD drives behaved perfectly under Mavericks so something has changed in Sierra that causes the issue and I am out of ideas of what to try!
Hi
I got the same problem here and might I know if reinstall MacOS is really resolving the issue ? Or, we need to wait for next update on this fix?
Hi guys,
I've got the same problem here.
I'm on MBP 15" 2016 which came already shipped with Sierra. I ran into this issue from the beginning.
In my first setup I mounted my user-folder to my external drive (Samsung T3). After experiencing the unmounting-issue, and also some "macbook-wont-wakeup-issues", I reinstalled Sierra without mounting my user-folder to the external drive, hoping that the issues won't occur anymore, but they did.
Now the "macbook-wont-wakeup-issues" have been fixed by a newer Sierra version, while the unmounting-issues still exist.
You see, a clean install didn't solve the problem, so there must be an issue elsewhere in the system.
This is really annoying and frustrating, since all my data I work with is stored on my T3.
