Printer Keeps Going Offline

For the last few months, I have been having a very annoying issue in that my printer continues to go offline - which doesn't allow anyone in the house to print anything.

Computers

  • One rMBP and two MBAs all running El Capitan

Router

  • Airport Extreme (tower)

Printer

  • Up until about a couple of weeks ago, an older Dell network printer
  • Current - Brother Wireless Multifunction

Since I am not using the older Dell any longer, I am not concerned about fixing it - however, the same issue was present when we had it wired to the Airport Extreme.   The Brother printer is wireless, and connects to our wifi via the AE.

A couple of things to note:

  • All of our devices (excluding the printer) run off the 5ghz of the AE.  We found better performance off 5GHZ vs 2.4.
  • The printer will only connect via 2.4 GHZ

Even after replacing the printer, each time we print, we are faced with the issue of the printer being offline.   It is very rare that we have actually been able to print something with the printer actually being online when we need it to  be.

What We Have tried:

  • Removing and readding the printer (both the Dell and Brother) in OSx a number of times
  • Restarting the printer - seems to work temporarily, but then goes offline in about 10 minutes after the printer has been restarted

I have searched Google and have found the same suggestions about removing and readding the printer, however, nothing seems to correct this issue.  Wondered if anyone else has experienced this and has any recommendations of things that may have helped.

Very frustrating to say the least!

I'm not sure what settings you have on your printer, but I had a similar issue and fixed it by turning on the IPV6 function in the settings of my Brother J480DW printer.
