Photo storage

i take a lot of photos and constantly am using up my iPhone’s storage. I have an iPhone 5 with 64 GB storage and iOS X. Only 1.5 left empty. I’ll be getting a new iPhone 8 or X, not sure yet. But the same thing will happen, so I need to do things differently. I also have a 3-4 year old iPad which is fine. Probably will get a new one next year? My iPhone syncs with iCloud routinely, but not my iPad. I don’t want all those images on my pad. So, when I want one I AirDrop it to the iPad. I also have a 225 page Pages book with 600+ images on my iPad that I work on routinely. It occupies appx. 400 MB, I think. I keep a copy of that book and discard from my Photos album most of the images. I’ve assumed keeping images in both places duplicates space used? But, I keep a copy of my publication in my Pages Documents file and at Box.com.

So, the questions.

1) How much space does an iCloud saved image in reduced size occupy on my iPhone? If I toss out some iPhone images how can I prevent iCloud from restoring them automatically? If I do toss them out will they still be saved on iCloud? If these thumbnail images, in fact, are using up a lot of space, as long as the full images are on iCloud, can I toss them?

2) What attachable photo and document storage devices do you like these days? Are there any that connect via Bluetooth or WiFi? Those that connect via lightning often can’t be charged concurrently.

Thanks much.

Re the first question:

iCloud Photo Library is a syncing service. Any photo (full size or optimized) you delete from a device where iCloud Photo Library is turned on will also be deleted from iCloud and from any other device connected to that iCloud Photo Library. See: iCloud Photo Library - Apple Support

Apple does not currently offer cloud-only storage for photos. If that is what you want or need, you may want to explore 3rd party options such as Google Photos or Dropbox.
