downgrade from os x sierra to snow leopard

Hi all, as stated on title, I would like to downgrade from OS X Sierra to an earlier OS X.

Before writing this post I have tried to reach answers on the web, no found though.

The reason for doing that is my 2011 MBPro became a slow machine in every little situation.

I tried erasing hard disk, then trying to start from DVD (both original installation Dvd and Snow Leopard OS X) but I got a kernel panic.

I was forced to reinstall os x by entering cmd R, I expected to have the factory default osx here, but I only saw Sierra os x. Currently I am restoring backup, but I'd rather try again if there is still a working solution for me.

Does apple do same thing as ios versions (we are not able to downgrade once they stop signing previous iOS versions)? Or there is still a light at the end of this tunnel, and is there any possibility for me to downgrade my sierra to another os x which works more fluent on my "old" mac?

In advanced thank you all, your advices and experiences are highly appreciated.

Early 2011 MacBook Pros shipped with a version of Snow Leopard that would require you to use the DVD that shipped with the Mac, not the commercial Snow Leopard DVD. Late 2011 MacBook Pros shipped with Lion, and it is not available on a DVD.

The only way to downgrade to a prior OS X version is to erase the drive and install the older OS X version.

There is nothing wrong with Sierra, millions of people are using it machines like yours. You would best be advised to figure out what is causing your issues. It is most likely some kind of 3rd party software.

Thank you for your reply.

Actually it is a late 2011 MBP but I bought it as restored unit on July 2012.

I erased my HD using Disk utility after pressing cmd R at restart.

After doing that I tried pressing Option after restart in order to boot from DVD Snow Leopard, also tried the original macbook pro installation dvd.

Both options return a kernel panic.

Late 2011 MacBook Pros shipped with Lion, so, as I said previously, they can't run Snow Leopard. They won't be able to boot from a Snow Leopard DVD.

I don't know what you're referencing as the DVD that shipped with your Mac, because a Late 2011 MacBook Pro shouldn't have shipped with one.

You are right Lanny, I have a snow leopard  of my previous macbook.

But I have also tried using the original dvd installation that came with this MBP and I had same kernel panic.

I suppose original dvd installation comes with Lion as you said, please correct me if I am wrong.

No

Lion was never on a DVD, that DVD never existed, so I question the validity of what you're calling the DVD that shipped with your Mac.

For a short period of time, some Macs shipped with Lion on a USB dongle, but it has never been available on DVD.

Internet Recovery is Option-Command-R, not Command-R.

That should allow you to renistall Lion, IMHO, the worse version of OS X available. You should concentrate on fixing your issues with Sierra.

Download EtreCheck and post (copy/Paste) the results back here.

You are right definitely. I stopped backup restoring and I tried again erasing HD and booting from a Lion USB image I toasted just before deleting, and it is actually installing Lion successfully. I will compare speed and performance on Sierra and Lion and test using the tool you posted. Being under Lion it offers me the chance of upgrading Mountain Lion, Yosemite, or another decent os x that my mac can run more fluent, which one do you think it woul be better for me considering My i5 2.8 Ghz 4GB RAM?

Thank you for your help

Sierra will run just as fast or faster than any of the previous OS X versions. So, once again, it's not your problem.

And note, your Mac can be upgraded to a maximum of 16 GBs, so 4 GBs doesn't represent a limit.

Thank you for your advice, I have also though of installing more RAM, but first I wanted to try a lighter OS X.

Actually I felt comfortable with Sierra, sync with iDevices work just lije a charm. But speed became a problem for me since Yosemite and today I decided to downgrade to see what happens.

One more question, will a sierra complete backup (made with Time Machine) will work on a previous version such as Lion?

I wonder about current Photos app, will  iPhoto would recognize my entire library?

Thanks

There will likely be problems as newer versions of iPhoto and iTunes libraries, Mail data, and will not be compatible with older versions of iPhoto, iTunes, and Mail.

but first I wanted to try a lighter OS X.

IMHO, newer versions are more efficient and out perform the older versions. They even take up less space.

Best of luck, signing off.

iTunes and Photos are a basic for me so if I experience comparibility issues I have no option but go forward to Sierra. I guess I should have considered this point prior to downgrading.

Anyway if is ok for you I will post results after checking Sierra using

https://etrecheck.com/ as suggested.

use this keyboard short cut (shift + command + option + r) when you boot your mac. This binding allows you install the os of factory default version.
