new ssd for mac book pro late 2011

Hello all - I am new to Macs - so please help me!

I have just bought a friend's Mac Book Pro late 2011, 13-inch Core i5 2.4  (A1278)

It is running OSX Yosemite

I have tried restoring with Disk Utility and everything and been through it with Apple - erasing disk etc. They say that as it won't restore something is fatally wrong with the hard disk.

So I will give replacing the hard disk a go - looks easy enough - but two questions:

1) is crucial SSD mx300 recommended?

2) How do I copy the operating system to the new drive. I cant seem to make a bootable restore USB from Disk Utility. I can format a USB drive there but cant seem to create a USB restore disk.
