Canon LiDE 220 on 10.12.6 Sierra

I'm getting the error "Release the lock switch, detach the USB cable and reconnect."  I'm using a mid 2010, 15" MB Pro with an i7.  Is anyone else on Sierra experiencing this complaint?  I'm using Sophos and I have created software exceptions to the Canon folder paths.  The scanner has been broken since the Sierra upgrade, it worked fine on Yosemite and it continues to operate correctly on Win 7.  I am inferring that I'm not alone as the driver has been updated several times in the past few months, most recently on 9-10-17.  I worked through the many steps suggested by Canon technical support and they are now kicking it back to Apple.  I've also tried rolling back the driver using the link provided in the forum.  One interesting thing: I've got a Samsung laser printer and periodically I'm seeing a Samsung Scanner driver showing up here: /Library/Image Capture/Devices . I trash and delete the file, reboot and experience the same scanner complaint.
