iPad Mini

I have an iPad Mini which is about 3 - 4 years old, 32 g storage. My kids are the primary users (1 hour a day most days) and a couple of weeks ago the home button seemed to become stuck "in", so they did something that made a kind of floating home button appear on the screen. All good, until a couple of days ago the screen stopped responding to touch and they couldn't shut it down. All we have is the notification screen, with slider which won't respond to touch.

A call to Apple support was very pleasant but ultimately no help, as the standard reboot suggestion of holding down the on/off button and home button at the same time won't work with the "virtual" home button, and the alternative of holding down on/off and volume control did nothing, even after close to a minute.

The local Mac shop can't repair the home button, and specialist Mac place (in the next state) has quoted a minimum of $200 (up to $500!!) just to repair the home button. This option is not financially viable for me, especially considering the age of the device.

After trawling through YouTube tutorials I gingerly tried dabbing rubbing alcohol on my finger and dabbing this around the edged of the home button, pressing it on every area around the edges. then tapping it upside-down on a towel. It still doesn't work.  My children are upset at the thought of losing all their progress in apps installed on this iPad, if anyone can suggest a way to get it going again please that won't cost a fortune, I would be very grateful!
