Logic playback from notation software
Trying to use Logic and the included software sounds as the playback engine for my scores created in Finale 2014 notation software. I find it hard to imagine that I am the only one with this problem but I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere!
I have enabled the IAC driver in AUDIO/MIDI set up and added IAC Busses 1-4
In Finale 2014, I have enabled inter-application ports and set Playback to “MIDI System”. I have set up my score so that all the woodwinds (11 staves) are routed to IAC Bus 1, brass (12 staves) are routed to IAC Bus 2, Strings and percussion (15 staves) to IAC Bus 3, and effects/other (6 staves) to IAC Bus 4. “Play Finale Through Midi” is checked and I have turned off human playback as well.
In Logic Pro X, I have created a new project with all the appropriate software instruments on different tracks with different MIDI channels that correspond to the MIDI channels I set up in Finale (i.e.: Clarinet 1 in Finale outputs to IAC Bus 1/MIDI Channel 5. In Logic, track 5 is an EXS24 Clarinet on MIDI Channel 5)
The Problem:
I actually got this to work (it doesn’t anymore) but only on the 1st 16 Channels. I could not figure out how to route the incoming IAC Bus 2 to the brass tracks, the IAC Bus 3 to the String sounds or the IAC Bus 4 to the effect sounds.
Sorry if this post is a bit long and please forgive my ignorance if this question does not belong here. I’m asking the Logic Pro community because I don’t believe Finale is the problem here. Any help would be most appreciated!!

You can't. Logic only provides the ability to receive on 16 midi channels simultaneously. Logic does not provide for input designations based on port. So you are limited to 16 regardless of which port you are sending out.
full disclosure - there is a way to alter the environment in logic to cable the individual ports thru a channel splitter and directly to the channel strip. This will allow the assignment of port/channel combinations greater than 16 for use with live playback. ( you will not be able to record them in logic but you wil be able to hear them and make them play From finale)
if you are not familar with the above - let me know and I will configure a sample environment for you and upload a picture so you can see how it would work.
Thanks so much for responding Indyuser!! I've been tearing my hair out on this for way too long now! To clarify a bit, I have no need to record MIDI in this set up, only to hear what I have written in Finale. Exporting a MIDI file from Finale and then importing into Logic works great whenever I need Logic to hold the midi data so I'm looking for live playback only. I figured I would have to get into the "Channel Splitter" but after a somewhat tentative (and intimidating) foray into the "MIDI environment" window, I realized that I was in a bit over my head! My assumption was to connect each of the IAC drivers from the "physical Input" (using a magnifying glass to see the little triangles!) to a different "channel splitter" (4 in total) and then from each of the 16 outputs on the channel splitters to the corresponding "channel strip". I had to create a new physical input and 4 channel splitters. to get this process started (is that correct?) and then started running cables. The result was every staff in Finale was sent to every channel at which point I decided my time would be better spent asking the Logic Pro community for some help!
If my assumption about the channel splitters was accurate, my followup questions would be:
1) I have to create a new Physical Input and channel splitters to start the process of connecting cables?
2) does the MIDI channel in the inspector for each track have to match the channel I connect to in the channel splitter or should it remain on the default "all"
3) If I use a "track stack" for a particular sound, do I connect the cable to only the header track channel strip or do I need to run cables to each of the channel strips that make up that sound? (Logic doesn't seem like it will let me do the later unless I use separate channels for each of the sounds in the stack)
Again, thanks so much for the help!!
1) I have to create a new Physical Input and channel splitters to start the process of connecting cables?
There can be only one Physical input object in a project and it should be created by default. So it is already there.
You will want to look for the names of the IAC buses you created on the outputs of the physical input. These will go to the channel splitter.
2) does the MIDI channel in the inspector for each track have to match the channel I connect to in the channel splitter or should it remain on the default "all"
No - the signal will never reach the tracks ( sequencer ) in this case. The signal will go from the Physical input to the channel splitter directly to the channel strip objects. No parameters in the arrange window (region or track) will affect the playback ( only the channel strip and those objects in the environment will affect the signal). So the answer is NO.
3) If I use a "track stack" for a particular sound, do I connect the cable to only the header track channel strip or do I need to run cables to each of the channel strips that make up that sound? (Logic doesn't seem like it will let me do the later unless I use separate channels for each of the sounds in the stack)
"I believe" you will have to cable each output of the channel splitter to each channel strips in the track stack. (use a monitor object or ornament for multiple cable routings from the channel splitter.
Hello,
I am doing almost the exact set up but with 7 IAC inputs and I cannot even get one to work or maybe it is not working for me the way it is described. Just to be clear in the Environment you are setting up the Channel Splitter in the "Mixer" pert of the Environment, correct? Or is this something to do in "Clicks and Ports"?
So to describe for instance IAC 1 into Channel Splitter (delete the SUM?). Then each Channel Splitter output into Each Multi-Instrument Input?
I appreciate your help here as with my old system where I sent direct to a VST Instrument it was much simpler via the IAC. Unfortunately the PLAY sequencer stopped being able to open multiple sessions so now I am forced to host the Plug In in some sort of DAW environment.
Thank you,
Dorian
