How do I get Mail to stop locking out IPs when ...

If one mistypes a password when setting up Mail, Mail tries to repeatedly log in after the first failed attempt. This is ridiculous and ends up getting the IP address of the service blocked.

How do I get Mail to only try logging once when configuring an account? Passwords aren't getting easier to type.
