Recovery Key issues with older iPad

I have an older iPad ver 5.1.1(9206) that will not backup to iCloud, keeps asking for a Recovery Key that I don't have, have tried using the trusted source method however that doesn't appear to work. Just wondering if the OS is too old?

"Recovery key" presumably comes up because you have set up Two-Step Verification.

Two-Step Verification requires you to have two of these three items:

• Apple ID Password
• Trusted Device
• Recovery Key

You said you don't have your recovery key (oops - mistake.  If you recover from this, be certain to get a new one and never lose it.).  Hopefully you know your Apple ID password.  A trusted device would likely be an iPhone if you have one.

thanks for your assistance upon further reading I have found that the issue is the two factor verification won't work with devices not using ios9 or higher as this iPad is 7 yrs old i figure it is more an issue of legacy hardware not being upgradable. Just another example of planned obsolescence.

You used the phrase "two factor verification".

There is no such thing in the Apple world. The two security methods are Two-Step Verification, which uses a recovery key, and Two-Factor Authentication, which does not use a recovery key, and does require more recent operating systems.

Do not mix these two methods. You use one or the other.

Hi robstead. If you have enabled 2-factor authentication for your Apple ID, try logging in to iCloud using the method in this link: Re: appleTV keeps asking for appleID, password and authentication code circularly. It works for older Apple TVs, which also don't support 2fa.

This works and is not something Apple shares for whatever reason!  Took me a month or more to find the actual solution.

Appending the 6 digit Apple ID Verification code to my Apple ID password worked.

Where it asks for your Password, enter your password plus the verification code.

After that it won't ask for the recovery key.
