Photos not being imported to iPad

I've imported photos to my iPad using the Apple lightning card reader and get a green tick next to each photo. But the photos are nowhere to be found on my iPad. This is the only way I can import photos as I can't seem to be able to sync photo albums from iTunes anymore...
