Mbp 2011: hdd upgrade to ssd?

I have a 2011, 13" MBP (base model). The 320gb HDD is probably dying.l because it constantly freezes and takes one hour to boot - even after a reformat.

Will it be possible to spend a couple hundred bucks on a small SSD (I don't do much on my laptop, even a 90gb ssd will do) to "upgrade" this laptop and essentially have it running good as new?

Or is this not how laptops work?

The drive can be changed to an SSD. One respected source: OWC SSD Upgrade Kits For MacBook Pro 2011

However you may want to do something more to insure that the existing drive is actually the problem. I can't advise you on that but someone else here may be able to.

If you have an Apple store near by, you can make a Genius Bar appointment, and have them run their diagnostics (this is free).  You can then say "Thank You" and take your Macbook home.  That is to say, they would of course offer to repair, but you are under no obligation to authorize any repairs.

You could run EtreCheck, and about a 3rd of the way down will be a [Show SMART report] button.  If you click on [Show SMART report], EtreCheck will display the disk's internal statistics/diagnostics.  In the middle of the SMART report are often a list of various items such as errors, retires, sector relocations, etc...  That last column is the raw counts, and if the disk is failing, generally those value will be in the hundreds of thousands or millions.

If you want to post the EtreCheck SMART report, we could look at it for you.

As to replacing your rotational disk with an SSD, it will almost definitely make your system run faster than when you first took it out of the shipping box.

I have use OWC <https://MacSales.com> to replace the rotational disk in my iMac, and it is one of the best decisions I made.

This page has videos, which should give you an idea of what is required to replace your disk with an SSD.  You can judge for yourself.

Thanks for the response everyone. I have a Genius Bar appointment coming up next week, so I'll just wait to get my laptop checked out.

I managed to reinstall OSX Sierra via Internet Recovery (though it failed 2 times). I notice that using Safari, or simply having it opened, will lock up my computer. I managed to download Chrome, quit Safari and everything works fine (although the laptop still freezes ocassionally).  Any way to find out why Safari is slowing everything down?
