Sierra Update 10.12.4 Freezes
Two Macs
IMac Late 2015 - 3.3 Ghz, 16 Gb Ram
Mac Book Pro Late 2013 - 2.3 Ghz, 16 Gb Ram
Both units have been updated to the latest version of Sierra 10.12.4 since last week.
Now there are intermittent complete freezing up (crash) of the entire system at intermittent intervals. The Imac has had 3 crashes and the Mac Book Pro has had two.
No one unique scenario between them both. Various apps open. Various apps used during crash (Safari, InDesign, Photoshop, Excel, Desktop finder, and even emptying trash).
This is an issue with the latest OS update. Nothing else has been introduced to both computers since this update.
Do you have antivirus apps or such?
do you have cleaner-, booster-, optimising-, apps or any such tools?
Can you post an etrecheck list of one of the two macs:
go to etrecheck.com,
read about what etrecheck.app does and how to use it,
download the etrecheck app,
run it and post the list here.
Lex
Hi Darin,
I am having the exact same issue and posted my own thread, but the issue is still not solved.
Have you got your system working? If so, what was the solution if any?
Thanks,
Jeremy
Bonjour Jeremy,
I have the exact same ANNOYING issue.
I hope Apple will produce a patch soon.
In the mean time, if you find a solution, I'll be glad if you share it with us.
Thank you!
Hello PL Gilbert,
I'm not 100% sure if the issue is resolved yet or not, but previously the system was locking up several times per day. In any event it never did yesterday and not yet today (about half of the workday completed). The only material changes I have made:
- Updated all third party software, but I was still experiencing the issue after.
- Ran entrecheck (see the red flags in my post from the report) and removed all traces of SMBUP software (listed as samba in the entrecheck report). I tried it over a year ago to manage some network connections but found it too confusing. Entrecheck reported that some of its components or files were still on my machine. Did a google search for terminal commands to remove them and ran entrecheck again to make sure it worked. No more samba red flags. There was an update to the logmein red flag, but it never resolved the entrecheck red flag. Was still experiencing crashes after this, but less frequent.
- Finally, I changed my user login credentials to no longer use my iCloud password and selected use separate passwords in the change user password window in system settings. My rationale for this was the other iMac we run in our office received a prompt during the macOS 10.12.4 update that this was no longer supported and must be changed. I never received a prompt such a prompt. I did some research online about this and it appears Apple no longer supports these login passwords and once you change this if enabled, you cannot change it back currently. Apparently, some people were getting locked out of their user accounts if they changed their iCloud passwords and it rendered their time machine backups useless from what I understand. Since I changed my login credentials, I haven't had a crash yet. Fingers crossed that fixes it. The odd thing is my MacBook Pro at home used the same login feature and was unaffected. I have since changed after reading the horror stories of people losing all of their data with this feature enabled. Hopefully Apple fixes the bug and brings it back because I like it in theory:(
Hi PL Gilbert,
Spoke too soon:( Literally 5 minutes after I wrote my last post... froze again
Jeremy
Hi PL,
One final thing, I should mention I tried all the usual things, booting in safe mode, repairing the disk, reset PRAM and SMC and a couple other suggestions made to me in my thread. The only suggestions in my thread I have been reluctant to try as of yet are all the ones made to me by Kappy in a long post starting with migrating to a new user account and everything thereafter.
Thanks,
Jeremy
AHRGH Crap!
Note that I do not use the icloud login on my computers. I dont think this feature has something to do with the issue we are facing right now.
I'm wondering if I reinstall the OS from skratch will do it.
I did also try restoring to a time machine backup from before the update, then re-running the update.
No luck:(
Jeremy
Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.
Bonjour Eric,
Thank you for the tip. I have installed this combo update sooner this morning and tested it.
Unfortunately it didn't work. My Macbook Pro still freezes.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
Safe Mode - About El Capitan also Sierra
Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra
If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
Etrecheck – System Information
Bonjour Eric,
Thank you for your help.
I have created a new admin account earlier today and tested it. So far, so good. The system hasn't crashed yet. *cross fingers*
I'll continue my testing and I'll get back here to let you know if everything is successful.
Thanks again.
