why do i need an icloud email address

I keep getting prompts to sign into iCloud then I went and tried to fix it. Now when I check the mail box in preferences and notes box it asks me to create an iCloud email address. What is happening??

Need more information. What do you mean when you indicate that you "tried to fix it"? What did you do to fix it at that point?

Also, don't know what you mean when you say when you "check the mail box in preferences". What are you referring to, specifically? If you mean you are trying to turn on Mail under iCloud, then you do need to set it up via the Mail app itself.
