imac firmware password

So I forgot my iMac firmware password and can't get into anything. The drive is locked so I can't even erase it. When I tried holding down option I got a lock screen on a grey page after which someone told me that I can change the ram and do a PRAM reset to fix it. I went back and now it's not working.... I don't even get a lock screen just an option with the Recovery Drive and an arrow pointing upward underneath.....

Thanks. My iMac (as I forgot to mention) is fairly old and so won't be in that period. Also im made to believe that there is a way... Just not sure how....
