How to avoid opening a new window when creating...

I am going out of my mind :-).

Problem is:

When I select a number of files, right click and select "Compress xx files" - IT OPENS A NEW WINDOW. Not only does it loose the previous selection - I also have to manage closing the extra window.

Often I select a portion of a list of files, right click, compress, select ongoing the next portion of files, right click and compress.

But now I have to close the extra window and then find the file where I need to proceed from. SO annoying.

Any way to adjust the settings for this? I cant fint the app that compresses anymore in Application...??

If you select n-items on your Desktop, with no current Finder window open, and choose compress n-items, then a new Finder window will appear in Sierra with the new Archive.zip file in it.

If you already have an open Finder window, and select/compress items from it, then the Archive.zip will also appear in it, and no additional Finder windows will open.

Tested on macOS Sierra 10.12.2.

FWIW, when you select x number of files, right click and choose "Compress x files", it should not open a new window. All that should happen is a new file called "Archive.zip" should be created in the same folder. There may be a third-party app interfering. First try restarting your Mac and try to compress the files. If that doesn't work, try starting in Safe Mode then test. If that works then you have an app that is causing a problem.

There was never an App in Applications to compress files unless you installed one.

I actually didn't think of that. One, I never have files on the Desktop and two, I always have a Finder window open. I learned something. Danke.

Bitte Schön.

FWIW it's the same on my setup running 10.12.3 - just tried with five photos and when compressed get the "Archive. zip" in a new Finder window (even if one was already open).

If do same but in "Downloads" no new Finder window appears!

Think it might have something to do with the fact when you zip separate files it creates a folder first to put them in because when you unzip, the individual items do not appear individually but in a "Archive" folder.

Unzip doesn't seem to open a Finder window on the desktop it just creates this Archive folder, if that folder is then compressed again a new Finder window appears if non was open before, but if one was already open the zip file appears in it i.e. no new window is opened.

The only similar app I have on my system is "The Unarchiver" - not sure if that is causing the differences to what others are reporting but it's not really an issue for me.

Something didn't sit right with what I previously posted, namely the opening of a new Finder window if files are compressed from the desktop but not if you compress from within a folder in Finder itself.

Just tried to compress the same photos placed on the desktop but from within Desktop folder of Finder (left side of window) - no new Finder appeared! Repeated again but this time from the actual desktop area and again no new Finder appeared, previously that would have produced a new Finder window.

The only two things done since the previous post was to open "The Unarchiver" and view preferences plus the above - now this is a long shot but could compressing the files from within the Desktop folder of Finder and not from on the actual desktop area itself somehow resolved this issue! Strange but worth a try because now no matter how I try I can not replicate the additional Finder opening issue.

You have accurately described what happens, which the OP did as well. The question is how do we stop that behavior? There's no need for a window to open when compressing files on the desktop. And if you have items on the desktop you are compressing (something I do almost every day as I send projects to print), they are not going to migrate to some random open Finder window. They, and the new Zip file, are still on the desktop, and now you have to deal with an unwanted new Finder window.

Is there any way to stop the unnecessary Finder window from being created in the first place?

Thanks to Viking OSX for answering this question , I have learned a very new thing .

Think the short answer is no - I've decided to remove The Unarchiver app (plus associated files) to see if that would make any difference on my system, but sorry to say it hasn't.

The only way to stop an additional Finder window opening when compressing files via the Desktop is to have a Finder window open in the first place with the Desktop section highlighted (but that basically defeats the object!) - if the Finder has any other location highlighted (say Downloads) you still get the extra Finder appear (i.e. two of them).

Also tried accessing Archive Utility preferences by first compressing some files then double clicking that zipped archive to get the app to appear under Recent Items (top left under Apple menu)

But when playing around with the settings it appears to make no difference

It's all a bit of a mess really, Finder opening when not really required and some preference settings appearing to have no effect (the Reveal.... tick boxes anyhow). The only other thought is a corrupt plist file but can't seem to find the one associated with Archive Utility so its probably protected by the System and therefore doesn't show up under search.

besides the suggestions by dialabrain in his first post, you can reset the Finder:

click the Apple menu (top left), choose ForceQuit, then Relaunch Finder.

Force Quit Finder does nothing to stop the Finder window opening when compressing files from the Desktop (on my setup anyway) - it does appear to be a bug, because why would you require Finder when you already have access to the files via your Desktop in the first place!

The other reason I consider this a bug is because altering anything in the lower section of Archive Utility Preferences (Save archive area) has no effect - the upper section (Save expanded...) still appears to work - it's easily tested by  altering the saved location for files or archive, the files you are able to control but the archive you can not - it always defaults to the same directory as the files being archived.

I can't even set the files to delete or go to Trash once archived, an option that is give via preferences but again fails to work - on the other hand with expanding you can choose to have the archive deleted or trashed, go figure

Hello SiHancox,

It is not a bug: we should have seen this issue earlier.

ForceQuit is a method to "refresh Finder".

The Unarchiver app is just an unzipper, not a zipper, it handles some more compression formats as the default unzipper.

What happened and should happen is explained correctly in this thread, if you think it is not working "normal" on your computer, there is probably some other software that interferes.

If you agree you can send an  etrecheck list.

No problem with what is described on how it works - it appears to be the same for my system as well (after finally fully understanding what others are saying), the issue is (for me) when altering anything in the lower half of Archive Utilities Preferences it makes no differrence.

For example, change "After archiving" from "Leave files alone" to any of the other options does nothing - this is not the same if altering "After expanding" (in the upper section), any change is duly carried out. Also whether the lowest mos tick box is enabled or not again make no difference - would think if not selected Finder would not open.

Would be nice to know if this failure in being able to change the lower Preferences is the same for others, I assumed it is and therefore assumed it's down to a "bug", but could be wrong
