Safari and Preview crash when printing
Safari (10.0.3) and Preview (9.0) both crash immediately when "print" is selected. However, the same document or webpage print with no issues using Firefox, Chrome, Acrobat Reader, etc. The specific printer is immaterial (using three: HP8620, HP6830, HP6500). This is a MacBook Pro running MacOS Sierra 10.12.3
Desperate for a solution...

Please try the following two suggestions:
- Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support.
- Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been.
- Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.
- How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.
- When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group.
- Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account
John, I'm not sure where it takes me, but:
(1) I Can print from Safari and Preview in Safe Mode
(2) I Can print from Safari and Preview as a Guest in normal mode
I saw a suggestion to delete com.apple.safari.plist from Library/Preferences, but there is no such file anywhere on my Mac.
What do I do now?
The Apple Support document suggests:
- If the issue comes back, you might have incompatible login items.
You should certainly investigate that possibility, but there are additional potential causes that often reveal the willful installation and use of ill-conceived non-Apple "anti-virus" junk, as well as various and sundry "cleaning" scam products aggressively marketed by a variety of sources. If you know that you installed anything in either one of those categories, uninstall them as a matter of course. That just goes without saying. Recovery from either one of those causes requires explicit instructions tailored to the particular product that may be involved.
If you eliminate that cause, or are uncertain of it, and still cannot determine the reason for the crashes, please examine the contents of each of the following folders:
~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents/
/Library/LaunchDaemons/
To navigate to them, copy and paste each one of the above lines into the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field.
By default Apple installs nothing in any of those folders, which means that you should be absolutely certain everything they contain is required for software that you need. One or more of those items are likely to be responsible for the behavior you are experiencing, so if you find anything installed in those locations please identify it by name.
If investigating that does not lead to a resolution, then please reset that Mac's SMC according to the following: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.
If that still does not help, please write back for additional suggestions.
I have no malware like you described that I can find, and did not notice anything that might have coincided with the upgrade to Sierra. The issue coincided precisely with the upgrade to Sierra.
The two Library folders do contain files (see below) but it is not at all clear (to me) why any of these files might prevent printing from Safari and Preview but not from Firefox, Chrome, Acrobat Reader, Acrobat, Word, or other print-capable programs.
Nonetheless, should I delete all the following files?
/Library/LaunchAgents/ contains these files:
com.adobe.AAM.Updater-1.0.plist
com.adobe.ARMDCHelper.cc24aef4a1b90ed56a725c38014c95072f92651fb65e1bf9c8e43c37a2 3d420d.plist
com.google.keystone.agent.plist
com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons contains these files:
com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist
com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist
com.google.keystone.daemon.plist
com.barebones.authd.plist
com.adobe.fpsaud.plist
com.adobe.ARMDC.SMJobBlessHelper.plist
com.adobe.ARMDC.Communicator.plist
Unless one of these rings a bell, I will reset the SMC early tomorrow and report back...
I appreciate your help.
Reset SMC this morning, no change to symptoms...
