How to remove my contacts from Skype
I just installed Skype, version 7.33. I probably pushed the wrong button during setup because it imported my entire Mac address book as Skype contacts. I REALLY don't want that. It's none of Skype's (Microsoft's) business and I don't trust them to respect my privacy.
I can't figure out how to delete them. When I try, I get an alert that says, "To delete this contact, remove them from your Mac Contacts." I Googled for the answer. I found some answers, but they don't seem to work. Maybe a recent Skype update makes it harder.
I suspect Microsoft has made it difficult to delete them, for its own nefarious purposes.
So I used App Zapper to delete Skype and all related files, then reinstalled. To my amazement and horror, it listed all my contacts from my address book. This time I'm sure I didn't authorize the import. Did Skype upload them to its server, so that when I install a new copy of the app and log in, they just get downloaded again? Or does it have a secret file that App Zapper does not delete.
I suppose I could start a new Skype account. I hope there is a better way!
Am I the only one who finds this deeply offensive? (I realize I might be making a dumb mistake. In that case, my bad.)
Please advise. Thanks in advance.
It's me, the OP. I did figure out what to do. Skype does not make it easy or obvious.
I'm going to post this reply to my own question because other users will likely have similar concerns.
Skype: Preferences: Contacts: Uncheck "Show Mac Contacts"
It still makes me very uncomfortable that Skype has such easy access to my Mac address book. Shouldn't there be some way to deny access? Shouldn't I have the option of opting out? Has Microsoft (owner of Skype) already uploaded all this information, to keep forever and sell to third parties?
Thank you very much for this information. I looked at many sites before I found yours, and yours was the ONLY one with helpful information. The contacts from my Address Book are all gone in my Skype Address Book, and I am very glad, esp. since the system had duplicated them, so I had two copies of every entry.... terrible system! Thanks again
You are not the only one who finds this deeply offensive! I don't like Skype, but have to use it for one professional application. I can't prove it, but I don;tremember all my Mac contacts being there before; it feels as if a background update of Skype has included them by default. I agree absolutely;ey the permissions should be sought first.
I have turned it off in Prefs, but fear it is too late. I also hate LinkedIn for it 'knowing' who I am in contact with - not sure whether it's from my correspondent's end or mine.
