Updating 2009 iMac

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at my friends computer because she isn't sure how to update the software. In 'Updates' via the APP store it does state 'No Updates Available', but the version is obviously not Sierra. It's a late 2009 model(full specs attached). I've only ever had one mac and it's only 3 years old, and never encountered an issue with hardware being too old to update with newer OS versions.

Can someone advise me if mac hardware does get to a point where it cannot be updated any further, if so is this mac in fact too old to be updated.

Thank you for your help,

Graeme

More pertinent information can be gathered at "About this Mac" under the Apple menu. Your friends iMac can indeed run Sierra, but not knowing which version it currently has and how much ram is available it's hard to recommend an upgrade.

This iMac could be upgraded to macOS Sierra, but with only 4 GB of RAM, it may not be the best option at this time. Although the minimum requirement is 2 GB, 8 GB would be the recommended minimum. You should also review each of the user's required applications to see if they will run on Sierra or have upgraded versions that do.

There are a few upgrade paths, depending on which version of OS X the iMac is currently running:

  1. OS X Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, or El Capitan > macOS Sierra
  2. OS X 10.7 - 10.7.4 Lion > 10.7.5 Lion > macOS Sierra

Here are a few articles that may prove helpful, on whether or not, you would want to upgrade this iMac to the currently latest version of macOS Sierra. Also, you should decide on either performing an upgrade or a new "fresh" install, with the latter being highly recommended.
