I dont have a copy of the previous iOS version ...

How can I rollback the iOS 5.1.1 to 5.1 or an earlier version ? Are these versions available for download ?

Downgrading the iOS is not supported. If you are having problems with it then if you say with they are then people on here might be able to help

Yes, having trouble with Facetime and encountered an issue with iTunes U following the upgrade. Have raised two separate issues for these.

If everything else fails...Here's how you could conduct a downgrade to iOS5.1, if it's the last working version for you. Downgrade to iOS 5.1 is still supported the last time I tried over 30+ hours ago.

I advise anyone to read the entire post before acting on anything!

The contents below tell you how to conduct a downgrade of iOS 5.1.1, only to 5.1. Through official means and no jailbreaking or system glitching is needed.

NOTICE:

  • This is NOT a reference to jailbreaking and is done through all official means provided to customers without circumventing software security of iOS or iTunes.
  • No instructions below are tailored to downloads of hack/circumvention tools from the jailbreak community.
  • I'm leaving all of these notices in one post to ensure forum moderators are aware of the entire purpose of the thread.
  • This thread is aimed purely at people facing issues with their devices prior to iOS 5.1.1 update, not wrecking them, not 'solving' the issue with blanketing.

Also.. if the forum moderators are not aware of such practices mentioned below in this thread... go find out from the Apple Software Engineers.

Here goes...

Good news

I believe you can download the entire iOS firmware and perform a downgrade to iOS 5.1, that's it.

Usually when Apple releases a new firmware, the previous version will still be made available for a time frame of around 2 weeks. As of now, a week has passed.

Apple temporarily verifies (not a reference to jailbreaking..) and validates that the firmware (the one right before the update) is a "new version". These ~2 weeks given is quite meant to be "familiarisation period", downgrades/upgrades allowed (currently, iOS5.1 as a restored version is allowed).

Note: You cannot go back to v4.3.5, v5.0.1, v5.0.0 etc... they're no longer validated by Apple as they're old, phased out firmwares.

Before you start performing/attempt a "downgrade",

  • Backup your device through iCloud or syncing with the host computer
  • Download /locate iOS5.1 firmware, still avaliable through iTunes as the new firmware is still in the Over-the-air period I believe OR,
    • googling the link
    • Protip: Your recycle bin/trash might contain the iOS 5.1 file you used OR look at
    • Windows Vista & Windows 7: \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    • For Mac: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
  • Restore your iPad in this case through DFU mode by
    • Attach the device to the computer
    • Turn the phone off
    • Hold power button and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
    • Release power button but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
    • At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.
  • Hold shift key + restore button on iTunes (for windows, I'm not sure of mac equivalent) also a deliberate feature of itunes
  • In the directory, point iTunes towards the ipsw download
  • iTunes will now authenticate the firmware
  • Let the device do its job
  • After all's done, restore your files onto the iPad/iDevice with the backup.

Reminder: The period lasts for around 2 weeks from the release date of iOS 5.1.1.

this work for IOS6?

Apple apparently does keep some prior iOS copies of their OS upon their Website for download.

I can understand their business need for continually wishing to push us forward to the latest and greatest Apple device, though there are some reasons why they should make available older versions (say even just the last minor release version iOS revision) - it doesn't even need to be supported, but at least having the official (non virus tweaked/hacked version) available would be a good thing.
