Stopwatch With Workout App

Ever since the new WatchOS I have not been able to use my Apple Watch the same and I’m wondering if it’s a setting that was changed or just how the watch functions now.

 

Previously I could use the workout app and have it running in the background. Then I would launch the stop watch to time my rests. Now if I rest for too long or my workout is too long when I raise my wrist to wake the watch it’s back to the workout app. I’ve tried every option in Settings > General > Wake Screen. I think I used to use within last hour of use. So if my stopwatch is what I’m using during a workout I would always see it

 

Sometimes I rest up to 90 seconds and it’s heloful just to look down and see the stopwatch and then once I’m done with my round, set, or sprint I can easily reset it. 

 

I used to have to bring my phone and make it so it would never lock so I could easily hit the timer. The Apple Watch made working out so much easier and I am really struggling without this function.

Under watchOS 4, upon raising your wrist whilst a workout session is active, it is normal for the Workout app to be shown.

 

It is not possible to configure Apple Watch to show the watch face or a different app instead (except that the Workout app can also be used to control playback of music from a synced workout playlist, by swiping left within the Workout app).
