Can Fusion drives be upgraded to APFS?

I seriously doubt that will be the case, but we can only be certain when HS is finally released.

I don't interpret that Support document excerpt to conclude it's a requirement, and in fact it won't even be an option for Fusion drives.

I believe the operative word there is all.

If they could be converted, there is no reason they would not be converted. Whether this is permanent is currently unknown.

The full sentence is:

When you upgrade to macOS High Sierra, systems with all flash storage configurations are converted automatically. Systems with hard disk drives (HDD) and Fusion drives won't be converted to APFS.

Which implies that you can upgrade HDD and Fusion drives to HS. The rest of the paragraph applies to SSD-only systems. So, no, APFS isn't a requirement.

It means Fusion drives will not "automatically" be converted to APFS.  But they can be converted manually if desired.

 

Only SSDs will be automatically converted. The rest would need to be converted manually.

 

High Sierra will work on HFS+ volumes directly if you choose to not convert them to AFPS.
