Sierra 10.12.6 losing Internet connection

I have a wired DSL connection to my iMac (Mid 2011, 2.7GHz, 20 GB RAM). When I boot up, Mail, Safari and Firefox automatically start up. After 5 minutes of continual use I usually lose Internet connection to Mail.  Occasionally Firefox will lose the connection too. But Safari stays connected most of the time. This problem just started happening.  I originally used Sierra 10.12.5. For a few months this never happened.  Then it did.  About a month ago I upgraded to 10.12.6 and it was fine for a few weeks. Now it started up again. What is confusing is this doesn't always happen.  I'd say 80% of the time it does.  I've checked for viruses and file permissions using Disk Utility. I've booted in single user mode and ran fsck.  All check out OK. The wireless connection works fine but I only use wireless for my MacBook Pro and iPad.  I want to keep my iMac wired.  How can I lose Internet for other applications but keep the connection in Safari?
