Target Disk Mode & "3 Beeps of Death"

My MacBook Air (mid 2011) has started doing the "3 beeps of death" after hitting the power button. (3 beeps followed by 5 seconds of silence, followed by 3 beeps, etc.)

I imagine the RAM is fried and that at this point, it's more practical to just purchase a new machine.

MY QUESTION: Even with "3 Beeps", is it possible to start my broken MacBook Air in Target Disk Mode? At this point I am just looking to get the files off of my broken MacBook transferred to a functioning machine.

Hi,

Just try it. Hold down the t key while booting.

I was under the impression that you could only tell by hooking it up to another machine, which would require me to buy the Thunderbolt cable.  Before I did that, I was hoping there was a way to first see if it is capable of starting in TDM.

Just try it. Hold down the t key while booting.

How will I know it is working?  Does it make a sound?  Does an icon pop up?  Currently, the screen will not even turn on.

The Thunderbolt sign moves around the display. With bad RAM, I'm not surprised it will not work.

It has been a long time since I tried to start a 2008 MBP with bad ram from a 2009 MBP, it did not start in target mode, but as much has changed since then that is not a definitive answer. To stop wasting your time, you should try, it may work.
