High Sierra install fail

Twice now I’ve tried to install the official release of High Sierra. My computer is a late 2015 27” iMac running Sierra. It goes through the install process to a boot screen with a countdown timer. At about 15 minutes remaining it freezes. I even let it run all night. Still frozen in the morning. Nothing I try helps, and I have ended up having to restore my backup. BTW I have more than 400GB free on my drive and 16GB of RAM
