External hard drive preventing my iMac to restart.

Hi!

 

I have a LaCie 500 GB USB external hard drive (with power adapter) that I use for my Time Machine backups and a iMac "Core i3" 3.06 21.5-Inch (Mid-2010) running El Capitan.

 

1- Since I updated my iMac to El Capitan, my iMac can't restart when my hard drive is connected to my computer (the screen stays light gray, and nothing else happens).

 

2- Also, every time I go back to my computer, I have tons of error messages saying "Disk Not Ejected Properly | Eject 'Time Machine Backups' before disconnecting or turning it...".

 

Is there anything I can do about those things?

Contact LaCie tech support. The drive is their product. Have you tried:

 

Repair the Drive for Sierra and El Capitan

 

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and press the Continue button.
  3. Then select the indented (usually, Vol_Name) volume entry under the external HDD from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid tab in the toolbar and wait for the Done button to activate. Click on it, then quit Disk Utility.
  5. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

What OS were you using before El Capitan? Did you ever see the improper disk ejection error with that OS?

 

I have seen some flaky behavior in recent OS versions, involving external drives and system sleep. But it's also possible that something has gone wrong with the external drive itself, or with its enclosure, or with the USB cable connecting it to the computer. Whether you can sort that out depends on whether you have another cable you can try, or how easy it is to remove the drive from the LaCie enclosure to try it with a dock or a different enclosure.

To be honest, it's my mother's computer. She was using Mac OS 10.6.8 and I don't know if she had that improper ejection error with that OS.
