Mail Crashing Every Single Time
Hi everyone. Mail is crashing every time I open it. This started when I archived some mail in a folder. I've deleted com.apple.mail.plist. That didn't work. I deleted some other files that help groups recommend to delete. That didn't work. I reinstalled Sierra. That didn't work. I'm stuck. What do I need to do?
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
Please refer to the following: If Mail unexpectedly quits when viewing certain messages - Apple Support
Quit Mail if it is open (I know it probably isn't, because it's crashing) and then open Mail again while pressing and holding a Shift key. Keep that key depressed until Mail opens, then release it. That action will launch Mail in windowed mode (not full screen) and with no message selected.
In Step 2 of that document, you will be dragging the vertical separator between the message preview list and the email body (remember no particular email message will have been selected) all the way to the right, until the email body is no longer visible. When you do that you won't be able to view the message body, only the message preview. Clicking the message preview once won't open the email. Double-clicking it (or selecting File > Open Message) will open the message so that it is readable.
Use that action to determine if a particular message is causing Mail to crash. If you can identify it, repeat the above, select that message, and delete it without opening it.
To restore Mail's familiar appearance, click and hold the right side of the Mail window for the "left facing arrow cursor" (looks like this <-| ) to appear. Drag it a sufficient distance to the left for the message text column to reappear. Nothing will appear to happen until you move it enough.
The above assumes you are viewing Mail in the "new layout". If you are using "classic layout" the vertical separator described above is a horizontal one, separating the message preview section of the window from the email body section.
I am also assuming you are not using any non-Apple "anti-virus" junk including Internet or banking "security" products. That just goes without saying.
Hi John. Thanks for your response. I open it. It crashes before I can do any of this. It opens briefly, and crashes.
No, I am not using any non-Apple "anti-virus" junk including Internet or banking "security" products. That just goes without saying.
