Why is there *still* no way to let spotlight se...

I'm a software engineers, and like many SEs and devs the fact that Unix is the framework of macOS makes it a great platform for both developing as well as personal usage. One thing that I will commonly do is search for files - I used to use spotlight, but now I use Alfred (which pulls its results from spotlight anyway AFAIK). Almost every configuration file or files meant to be "ignored" in a code bases version control are hidden / prepended with a dot (i.e..bash_history).

First, the fact that to show the files in finder, you have to use hacks by messing with the defaults CLI util or a third party app is ridiculous. But what's even more frustrating is that there is no option - not even a hidden one, to the internets knowledge - that will make Spotlight index these files. It makes Spotlight pointless for me if I know it won't be comprehensive. People have had this complaint for years, why are we still not getting this single extra option for advanced users?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

Or you just type cmd-shift-.

FWIW, third-party apps are needed for many different jobs. Why should searching for invisible files, which are invisible for a very good reason be any different?

EasyFind will search for invisible files and it's free.

Because Spotlight is presented as a 1 stop shop for searching for files. If I'm a develop and 50% of the files I need to access are . files or hidden, Spotlight is useless. Of course I can use third party apps, but then it adds an extra step that turns it from an elegant tool that does it all into a thing I don't bother using because there is no way for it to search for the things i need. EasyFind works, but it ***** - its not an Apple software, it's a third party one, you just cant compare the integration and ease of use. I have to use an alfred workflow that opens easy find and  copy and paste the search term into easyfind. I get Apple products for the beautiful integration of the software and the hardware, as do most people. This is an ugly, hacky thing that wastes an otherwise great OS feature, which is what makes macOS so attractive.

If you are a developer it should be a simple matter to install EasyFind and solve your problem.

I guess you missed the point. You are not the only user. Hidden files are to protect the average user. You can always send Apple feedback about your displeasure.

Product Feedback - Apple

Yes, hidden files are there for a reason. But they are also unhideable for a reason. They've made it so people who know how to use the defaults CLI or the hotkey above can show them in finder. They could do the exact same thing with spotlight - it doesn't have to be the default, enabling it can be a hoop to jump through like any other "advanced user" setting.

Well no one here can change it. Hence the feedback link in my previous post.

Barney ... type cmd-shift-. where? I tried in in Spotlight search field and finder search field to no avail.

He's talking about in finder. (which my question wasn't about but it was a good chance to be petty)
