Audible Audiobooks Unplayable on iPod Nano
This is in regards to my Seventh Generation iPod Nano.
Recently when syncing audiobooks downloaded from Audible, the synced file will not play correctly. Everything seems to sync correctly (no errors), but when trying to play the audiobook from the iPod I hear the "This is Audible" sound and it stops playing at 0:02 seconds.
This has now happened to me with two separate audiobooks. I can listen to the audiobook fine in iTunes, so it seemed to have downloaded correctly from Audible, but just will not sync to the iPod correctly. I have factory reset my iPod Nano, and deleted and re-downloaded the audiobook files from Audible both with no success.
I have had multiple audiobooks download perfectly in between of the malfunctioning ones, and podcasts/music all download perfectly fine. This issue just started happening around the beginning of April. Has anyone else seen this, and has anyone found a cause or fix for the issue?
acc to audible.de support line there must have been some sort of change in regards to audible's .aa files (format 4); audible suggested either to stop using your iPod nano / iPod Classic for another device (for example iPhone and audible app) or using a different format of better quality
kindest regards
I've traded e-mail with Audible for a week without a satisfactory answer. At times they say this affects books produced after 1/1/2017 but that's not the case. The one book (and so far only one book) that is failing for me was produced around March 16 but a book produced around March 21 is working just fine. The failing book has a PDF file attached and that might be part of the problem. I think being told to get rid of your iPod nano is a poor response. I've been a professional computer programmer for 42 years and yes we have bugs and other issues but we don't treat customers this badly. It's not like the iPod Nano is Windows 98 - the iPod nano is still a viable product with new generations being developed (or is Apple going to drop the nano also and Audible is just leading the curve). Fact is, there is no competition for the nano as a device for music AND books AND other media. I can't jog with my iPhone or iPod mini. Will the even smaller MP3 players work for Audible books? And if so for how long?
I expect to be dropping my Audible membership after more than 6 years of very little trouble until today.

I'm inclined to agree. The fact is that for Audiobooks to be widely accepted, they need to be playable on all mp3 players, and of course, an iPod is an mp3 player - just one with a fancy name.
One would assume therefore, that Audible's audiobook files would be in a format that any mp3 player can handle.
Personally, I would continue to discuss the matter with Audible.
I have suffered the same problem with my last 3 downloaded audiobooks. Today I downloaded the audiobook from the Audible website in the "Enhanced" Audio Quality format rather than "Format 4". When I imported that version of the audiobook from ITunes into my Ipod Nano Library, it now seems to play fine.
Thanks burkadams.
I had the same problem as described above. Once I downloaded from audible in the "enhanced" rather than "format 4" format the audiobook has played perfectly on the ipod nano. Cheers
I did get it to work with the Enhanced format. Have you noticed what happens when you try to play back at "2x" speed? Not as good as Format 4 was. I was able to use Downpour but it adds a book as music and was very clunky to deal with. So far Enhanced format is not an enhancement that I can determine. But I am staying with Audible for now and they replaced a book for me without charging. Apparently the person at Audible who told me that I could not use the iPod nano was not fully informed. But thanks to those who told me to keep talking to Audible support.

Ah!
Up until now I wasn't aware of two different specifications for an audiobook. If someone can post the file details of the two formats, then perhaps we can offer quick and useful advice to others in the future.
Select any audiobook and click on Edit/Get Info/File and make a note of the following (note that there are two format fields):
- size
- channels
- kind
- bit rate
- sample rate
- format
- id3 tag
- encoded with
- format
The fiend and burkadams - THANK YOU! I use an iPod Classic for my audiobooks as it holds so much. Enhanced was showing form my Audible downloads - but not until I checked the get info/file did I realize that it was still Format 4. I went into my Audible library and set it to Format 4 and then back to Enhanced - I now am downloading the aax files - the enhanced version - this is immediately obvious in iTunes as the audiobook image is clear, not fuzzy... and it does work on my iPod Classic! Yes!
This is the first time that I have come across this and funny enough, the file I was having problems with was published by Audible in 2013, yet a later book in the series, published in 2016 was just fine in the old format... go figure.
Be aware of longer audiobooks through, like 15-21 h or so, these might not work in the end, despite better audio quality chosen; the the better audio quality will only partly resolve the issue;
Thanks Marc... Good to know. I be sure to download in sections, if available, instead of the whole audiobook.
Thank you! I will have to give it a try. It has been very frustrating.
I have the same issue!! Same time frame as well.
Some Audible books works, some don't. It's a crap shoot. Horrible!
Any new information on what might help?
I have read the suggestion that downloading the enhanced format might be the problem; I should download in the lower format (4). But I did that already.
Now on the Audible help pages I read the opposite: try enhanced, instead of format 4. Hope that works. I hate this!
Yes, downloading in enhanced format should be the answer. See https://audible.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9150/kw/format%20nano for details.
