Family configuration for iTunes, Macs, and iPho...

So here's our situation.

2 Mac Mini computers. One the main family computer, one a homework station

2 parent iPhones

2 parent iPads

3 teenagers .. each has an iPhone that is operating as a full smartphone and an older iPhone without a sim and no service that is configured as a music only device. We want them to have the ability to listen to music at times we don't want them on the smartphone... so we've kept around 3 older devices to function as music only.

Here's what we need to happen though. My wife and I can share playlists and content. So no issue with the main family computer, our iPhones and iPads. We will use one account on the mac with one iTunes library.

But for the kids, I want them to be able to open iTunes on either Mac while they are under their account on those machines and be able to have their own playlists so they can sync their two devices with either machine. (I think I understand that the only playlist sync option other than Apple Music is to create the playlists on iTunes and sync the devices.)

Also, I want everybody to have access to all of the family music purchases.

I'm thinking I need to setup a hard drive on my router (NAS-like) and move the iTunes directory to it. Then configure iTunes with multiple libraries, looking at this network location. Finally, train each person to open iTunes to their own library (Or.. will iTunes remember the library it opened while in the particular account on the mac? So if child A opens library A under his account, will it remember that choice after child B has been on the computer accessing library B under his account.?)

I think that covers individual playlists on multiple computers.. but how do we share the music that is purchases? I'll download using the "parent" iTunes library. The music media files will be on the NAS drive. If we configure iTunes to use the same iTunes account with auto download, will it register in the kids' library files the next time they open up? Will it download a second copy of the media? Or will it see that it already has it and just update the library file?

Finally... am I off my rocker here and don't understand iTunes at all?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

-Doug
