Delete documents from iCloud but not my devices.

Having seen that my iCloud storage is full I have visited manage iCloud storage and noticed that documents from my macbook are backed up on my iCloud. I don't need this as I my macbook is backed up on an external hard drive so would like to free up the space on iCloud for my phone backups. I tried unchecking these documents e.g. pages and iMovie under options in iCloud Drive and my iCloud drive folder is empty in finder but when I click on manage iCloud storage these things are still taking up a lot of space.

I guessed that these are old back ups so went to delete them from iCloud knowing I still have them on my macbook. When I did this I got a message saying "All iMovie documents and data will be deleted immediately from iCloud and all of your devices." which I don't want to do as they are important files.

How can I delete these files from iCloud without deleting them from my macbook?

I think you might be talking about System Preferences iCloud iCloud Drive Options Documents Desktop & Document Folders

However, please don't consider this a backup, it isn't

Yes this is where I unchecked iMovie and pages etc but they are still taking up space on iCloud. I have these backed up on an external hard drive so I don't want them on iCloud. Do you know how I remove them from my iCloud without removing them from my devices.

You can disable iCloud syncing for each app in each app's settings, i.e. settings pages.

That sounds great, thank you. Sorry if this is a silly question but where do I find the settings for each app. Do I have to open each app or is it somewhere in system preferences. I have had a look in both but can't seem to find this.

In regard to settings for each app, I was referring to a mobile device. On a mac just drag the documents out of the iCloud Drive folder to a location of your choosing.

My iCloud drive folder is completely empty but space is still being taken up on iCloud.

You can see what your iCloud storage is used for at Settings Apple ID(Top) iCloud Storage iCloud Manage Storage on your iOS device or System Preferences iCloud Manage...... on a Mac.

Yes I can see this and currently a lot of space is being used for iMovie and Pages but I don't know how to free this space up. I have tried unchecking them and my iCloud drive folder is empty like I said but they are still showing up in the places you have posted above. I can see that I can delete them from iCloud>Manage Storage but this brings up the pop up telling me that this will also delete them from all my devices.

If you have pages and movies documents they will be in the iCloud Drive folder on your Mac.

If you go to iCloud.com/iCloud Drive, do they show there?

They don't show at all in iCloud drive in finder. Only Pages show in iCloud.com/iCloud Drive. But more shows in iCloud>Manage Storage.

By any chance have you tried deleting their containing folders at any time. i.e. the ones I'm pointing to in my image above.

Unfortunately I can't see any containing folders in my iCloud Drive folder in Finder. Screen Shot 2017-08-30 at 20.31.45.png

That's what I'm asking, have you tried deleting them at any time.
