Mac Pro (2010) trouble rebooting following powe...

Mac Pro (Mid 2010) 3.2 GHz Quad core Xeon 20 GB DDR3 RAM  Sierra 10.12.6

We had a brief power outage today. According to the clocks, just a couple of minutes. Nobody was on the MacPro at the time.

When I tried to start the Mac pro up all I got was a quiet click.  Power to the surge supressor was good.   Using a trick I learned for a remedying a similar syndrome , I unplugged the machine and waited. It took a good  three hours for the machine to recover. Confess I was pretty nervous as to whether it was going to come back or not.  It was also bad timing work-wise.

Would a UPS help in terms of avoiding unneccessary 3 hour recovery periods for minute long power outages?

And is this problem related to an earlier  problem which is a bit similar described below.

About a year ago (maybe 2) the Mac Pro no longer tolerated the "sleep" function.  It wouldn't wake up after going to "sleep".  Wouldn't respond to keyboard and more importantly pressing the power button would give only a similar quiet click. Learned through forums that you had to unplug the machine and wait a good long time and it would recover.  (We of course then disabled the sleep function and have carried on without it ever since).

I know this  beast is old but we are waiting for Apple to build some new models and with all that RAM it runs Photoshop just fine ; )

Thank you for your input.  I value it highly

Macs can tolerate a power outage fairly well as long as nothing is writing to the disk at the time. Modern operating systems help. Of course, your best protection is a UPS and you can purchase a decent one for under $100.

I'm not sure the Sleep problem is related but running 24/7 is not harmful. I do not use Sleep myself and never have on my 2010 iMac and it runs as well today as when it was new. I only shutdown/restart for software updates/upgrades.
