Grandson cannot use his Apple ID on MacBook Pro

This week, I restored my old mid-2009 to its original state to prepare it to give to my grandson. The machine now runs on Snow Leopard, just like it did when I bought it seven years ago.

Today, my grandson set up the computer for his own use. When he reached the point where he had to give his Apple ID, he got an error message saying something to the effect, "This Apple ID cannot be used at this time." He has had an Apple ID for years, and he has used it with his iPhone 6. Can someone explain why he can't use his Apple ID?

The setup process told him he could skip this step and enter his Apple ID later. All well and good, but not having entered an Apple ID seems to have thwarted another part of the setup. Software Update told him that new software is available. I fully expected that. He clicked to download the software, and it said the update would require restarting the computer. He restarted, but the machine switched to what appears to be a standard background picture and stopped. It seems to me that getting and installing any updates would require that he enter an Apple ID, wouldn't it?
