27" iMac Hard Drive

I have a 2011 27" iMac and the power button no longer works.  I tried all of the online fixes and they all worked for a while but it finally went out.  I opened the thing up and removed the switch and rigged it to the outside of the case but when I reassembled it I damaged one of the cable sockets from the monitor (not the near impossible flat wide one that is connected to the monitor but the much smaller one that connects in the same location....the socket is made of plastic and the cable side of it ripped the socket and it will not stay in place now).  I am done with trying to fix this machine (it has been virtually bullet proof since new other than the power button) but I would like to save the hard drive.  I am pretty certain that I have everything of importance backed up to a western digital external hard drive but I am not 100% positive.  I would like to remove the internal hard drive and put it an external case so I can retrieve the data.  I will probably list the computer on ebay for parts and I also don't want to sale the hard drive incase it has something on it Im not aware of (like banking information).  I found this hard drive enclosure on Amazon - Akitio SK - 3501 U3 and I did some research and apparently it may work.  Does anyone know if this is possible or has anyone done it with another external hard drive enclosure?  I did this in the past with PC hard drives but that was in the dark ages before I went all Apple all the time!

Check out OWC for enclosures for 3.5" SATA HDDs. There are many other sources like Best Buy and Amazon. Akitio products tend to be a bit expensive, relatively. You want an enclosure that internally supports SATA and externally connects using USB or Firewire. The latter, FW800, is considerably faster than USB 2.0.

Thanks!  I will check them out and if I am able to fix my problem I will post the results!

I have one of the same at home. The good thing is that the drives are located in the front so only minor disassembly is needed. However, you will need to remove the entire front display panel. Take care with the small cables that need to be disconnected before the front can even be laid down.

Those cables are why I am looking for a hard drive enclosure LOL.  I destroyed on of the sockets when I reassembled.  The machine is fine other than there is no monitor now.

You can find replacements for the cable, but if you destroyed the socket you are S.O.L. Been there, done that but the socket was OK with the help of a little duct tape and a new cable. I had to replace the LG display which went bad a year after the extended warranty expired and Apple stopped doing any repairs on it.
