Stuck in startup; external install disk not wor...

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running Sierra. While using it yesterday, everything was working fine until the screen suddenly went black, and it started rebooting itself over and over again. I held down the power button to turn it off, then tried resetting PRAM. It restarted once with 'chime' > Apple logo w/ progress bar that got about half way > grey screen. And that's it.

Using another MacBook, I created a bootable installer on a USB drive, as described here: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support. Booting the computer while holding down the Option key, I was able to select the join the wi-fi network and then choose the USB drive as the boot disk. Then the Apple logo w/ progress bar > gray screen, and that's it. I let it sit there for about 10 minutes and nothing happened, other than the fans kicking in.

So what's next here? Any suggestions?

Hi,

Have you upgraded the RAM? If so, put the original back in and try it out.
