iPad won't go into recovery mode

My iPad Air 2 displays that it is disabled and I have to connect to iTunes. When I do this it says iTunes cannot connect because I need to unlock the iPad. I tried to put in in recovery mode and and it kept bringing me back to the iPad is disabled screen! I'm not sure what to do and would appreciate some help! Thank you!
