Mac will not print black with OS X 10.10

We recently purchased an Epson WR-2530, followed all required installation and drivers, and printer will not print anything black. We had a previous printer (Lexmark Prospect Pro205) that experienced the same problem, but we thought the printer was just bad. We purchased this new printer to resolve the problem, and have now found that it continues. Have performed many alignment tests, head cleanings, driver updates, setting manipulations, and nothing has worked. Someone suggested downloading and installing Gutenprint 5.2, but my computer skills do not allow me to install this driver (I have no idea how to do this). Any help would be great, my fear is I will never be able to print anything!

Hello,

I have kind of the same issue at times.  The best I can do is when I wish to print in all grayscale without using color.  From the print dialog window pull down the menu directly under the page range area.  That menu should have the application name you are currently printing from.  Select "Quality & Media" from that menu.  Once you do that you will see a "Grayscale Printing" check box.  Try checking that box and sending a test print.

Otherwise I don't know your parent app, but you would want to make sure that the source that is creating your documents is not set to something like "Rich Text".  If I remember the term.  Rich Text uses 100% color ink to create black.  Something from back in my printing days.  They could even call it something else.  So be on the lookout for that too.  Otherwise, just pour over all the print settings to see if anything stands out.  Oh, make sure you have all the latest print drivers loaded for your printer.  Don't use the CD that comes with the printer, go to their site and download the correct driver for your printer and operating system.  You most likely know that already so sorry but it's worth mentioning in case.

Best of luck,

Tim

Thanks Tim.

Grayscale seems to not work either, that was my initial quick test to see if that would work. Nothing that I can find in OS X or the Epson app has "rich text" supported, but I will keep on digging to see if that is the case. I did not use the CD for the drivers, and downloaded them from Epson directly. This is a really odd thing that is happening!

Hello my friend,

When troubleshooting we look to see if the problem is local or global.  Again, you may very well know this so apologies.  Anyway, if you haven't already, then please create another account on your Mac.  You should do this anyway, actually everybody should.  (The Tim knows).  So test to see if the problem exists in the other account as well.  I name the extra account maint and make it an admin account.  If you find that it prints normally with the maint account, that is good, because it just means that one or more of your local account preferences are munged in the primary account.  Global on the other hand is a bit more work to solve.  If that's the case you can try reinstalling the operating system.  In most cases that will overwrite the low level culprit and put you back in the sweet zone.  Let me know how it goes, it's an interesting problem.  I like those.  Especially when they aren't mine.  ;-)

I have been supporting Ma cs for a very very long time.  If IICX rings a bell.  Anyway, just reinstalling the OS over the top is pretty quick.  However, we techs like to find the little sucker that's causing the problem and we can spend many hours scouring to locate it.  It's a challenge to us not to let the computer get the better of us.  Win.  But the reality of it is often a simple OS reinstall will get you back in the game.  Beyond that is a hardware problem concern.  To me from what you describe it sounds software to me.  So don't worry too much about that at this point.

Peace, Tim

Tim,

I really appreciate all your support and help, you are well versed. I followed your instructions in setting up a test account to see if they were more localized settings rather than a global problem, and no luck there. Before I took the next step to reinstall OS, I decided to take the printer back to the store and let them know what was going on. They completely refunded me and upgraded me to another printer for the same price. I know have set up the Epson XP-820. I followed all the instructions, set up the correct drivers and software, and did a test page that would not work on the previous printer.....it works great!

I guess my takeaway on this experience is to trust Apple has set up things correctly, like always, and look to the external device for the problem. This also supports my use of Apple Support, because people like you are so helpful when you just want to pull out your hair and throw the computer across the room when you can't figure out what is wrong.

Thank you again Tim, and best wishes in continuing to solve other people's problems!

Cheers, Michael

Awesome Michael,

Since you had already attempted a second printer my mind was pointing to your Mac's software as the culprit.  I can tell you from experience that printing ranks among the toughest issues to solve.  Whenever I set up a computer, and I have set up hundreds, printing is pretty much tested last, with fingers crossed, because if it isn't printing correctly, I can bet that I will be committed to some significant troubleshooting time along with an expletive or two!  I'm really happy for you that you now have this resolved, as I have felt your pain countless times before.

Happy Mac-ing amigo,

Tim

Just go to "Quality and Media" and then select the option "Grayscale Printing".

Hi Tim

If you're game to offer more advice on this subject, I also have this 'no black ink' issue. Second (newer model) printer, new user, reinstall Sierra system - none of these have worked. And greyscale printing does also not function.

Cheers

Darryl

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is  a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one. Post in the Sierra community.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

macOS Sierra: Reset the printing system

Yes, also 'reset the printing system.'

Have also just 'resolved duplicates' in Font Book, and cleared the font cache with Terminal.

Nada. Same issue remains.

Thanks, I'll look at making a new post, but in the meantime appreciate any responses here.
