Touch bar not working after sleep and low battery.

When I close the lid of my macbook pro, the battery appears to drain. Sometimes so much as to have the 'low battery' logo show up when re-opening the lid after a few hours. Upon plugging in the charger, I can log in etc, but the touch bar is blank. Thus, no easy access brightness / volume control / ESC button.

Annoying: only a restart re-enables the touch bar.

Is this a common problem? Are there ways to reenable the touch bar after it gave up its life during battery drain?
