I have an unresponsive iPad pro

My new (three or four months old) 12.9-inch iPad pro intermittently ceases to respond when I tap on live "buttons". This occurs from the home screen and within apps. Sometimes, I have to tap the virtual "Home" button, go back to the home screen, and then tap again on the app to get the screen to respond. Other times, I can just wait it out.

When I'm reading a book, there is no delay but that's probably because the time it takes me to read two pages is long enough for the screen to become responsive again. By contrast, when I'm playing a game, the delay can be half a minute or longer. Once the screen "revives", it's good for several taps and then becomes unresponsive again.

I have the same experience whether I'm tapping to activate a "button" or swiping to go from one page or screen to another.

As always, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
